What Should You Expect at Your First Karate Lesson in Kenosha?
Starting karate for the first time is exciting — but it’s also normal to feel a little unsure about what will happen. So let’s walk through exactly what you can expect at your first lesson at Championship Martial Arts in Kenosha.
Step One: The Evaluation Lesson
Your first visit is not jumping straight into a large group class.
Instead, we begin with an evaluation lesson. This is either one-on-one or a small-group introduction designed to set you (or your child) up for success.
During this lesson, we teach the foundational skills needed to feel confident in a regular class.
Students will learn:
-
A basic palm heel strike (similar to a strong high-five motion)
-
A basic punch
-
A basic kick
-
A basic block
-
How to use training equipment safely
We introduce pads and beginner-friendly gear so students can experience what real training feels like — in a controlled and encouraging environment. Sometimes parents even get involved holding pads, which makes the experience even more fun.
This lesson is scheduled outside of regular class time so we can give focused attention and ensure every new student feels prepared.
Understanding Your Goals
At the end of the evaluation lesson, we ask an important question:
What are you hoping your child develops through martial arts?
We typically see four main priorities:
-
Confidence at school
-
Self-discipline at home
-
Fitness
-
Self-defense
Many parents assume martial arts is mostly about self-defense. Interestingly, most families tell us confidence and discipline are their top priorities.
If bullying is part of the concern, we absolutely address self-defense skills — but we also work heavily on confidence, communication, and the ability to stand up for oneself respectfully.
Every child is wired differently. Every family has different needs. That’s why we take time to understand your goals from the beginning.
Transitioning Into Regular Classes
Once the evaluation lesson is complete, students are ready to join their age-appropriate group class.
Because they’ve already learned the basics, they walk in feeling confident instead of overwhelmed.
Classes are structured, supportive, and organized by age and rank so students train alongside peers at a similar level.
