I spent a decade—from 2000 to 2010—walking the hallways of the Racine Unified School District as an elementary teacher. During those years, I didn’t just teach music; I watched the social dynamics of thousands of kids. I saw the difference between the students who carried themselves with quiet confidence and the ones who, unfortunately, became “soft targets” for bullies.
As a parent, you might think you know what’s going on, but sometimes the most important signals aren’t spoken—they are seen. Here are three warning signs I learned to spot in the classroom that you need to look for at home in Kenosha.
1. The “Look Down” Reflex
When you ask your child, “How was school today?” where do their eyes go? If they immediately drop their gaze to the floor, that is a massive red flag. In my years as an educator, the “look down” was the first sign that a student was feeling defeated or intimidated. Confidence starts with eye contact. If they can’t look you in the eye, they certainly aren’t looking a bully in the eye.
2. The Defensive Posture
Watch your child as they walk to the bus stop or into their building. Are their shoulders hunched forward? Is their head down? This “turtle” posture is a biological signal of submission. Bullies in the Kenosha Unified School District and beyond look for this specific body language. If your child is dragging their feet and staring at the ground, they are broadcasting that they are a “soft target.”
3. The School Mention “Shift”
Pay attention to their physical reaction the moment you bring up school. If their body language shifts from relaxed to tense, or if they suddenly “shrink” into themselves, something is going on. A picture is worth a thousand words, and your child’s posture is telling you exactly how they feel about their environment.
Breaking the “Soft Target” Cycle in Kenosha
At Championship Martial Arts – Kenosha, we have been helping kids trade that “hunched” posture for a “black belt” posture since we opened in 2020. We don’t just teach kicking and punching; we teach Bully Prevention through body language.
When a child learns to stand tall, make eye contact, and move with purpose, they stop looking like a target. This is how we build the mental toughness and focus they need to navigate any Kenosha hallway with confidence.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
Phone Down, Eyes Up: When your child gets home, put your phone away and look at their face. Demand eye contact during the “How was your day?” conversation.
-
The “Bus Stop” Audit: Watch them walk away from you. If you see the “hunch,” it’s time to start a conversation about dopamine regulation and physical confidence.
-
Practice “Tall” Walking: Encourage your child to walk with their chin up and shoulders back. Changing the outside starts to change how they feel on the inside.
