I spent a decade—from 2000 to 2010—as an elementary teacher in the Racine Unified School District. I’ve walked the halls of our local schools for over 25 years, and I’ve seen a silent crisis taking over: the disappearance of physical activity.
Not to be the “old guy,” but back in the 1990s, we didn’t have a choice. Our parents booted us outside and told us not to come back until dinner. Today, I’m seeing kids who are outside 10 times less than we were two or three decades ago. They are getting 10 times less sunshine and 10 times more screen stimulation.
The School “Activity Gap”
Many parents assume their child is getting enough exercise at school. But let’s look at the reality in 2026:
-
Recess is shrinking: In many middle schools, it’s gone entirely.
-
Gym class isn’t what it used to be: I’ve been floored walking into high schools recently seeing how many students simply don’t participate. What used to be an “Easy A” and a chance to grind has become a period of standing around.
When kids aren’t pushed to move, they don’t just lose physical fitness—they lose grit.
Reclaiming the “Grind” in Kenosha
Grit isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you develop by pushing through physical obstacles. Since opening Championship Martial Arts – Kenosha in 2020, our mission has been to provide the workout that schools no longer offer.
In a karate class, there is no “standing on the sidelines.” We push our students to stand tall, keep their chins up, and develop the mental toughness that only comes from physical exertion. Whether it’s mastering Bilateral Coordination or safe, controlled sparring, we are building the “focus muscle” that 24/7 screens have allowed to atrophy.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
The “Gym Class” Audit: Ask your child specifically what they did in gym today. If the answer is “nothing” or “we just sat there,” they are in a physical deficit.
-
Sunshine is a Nutrient: Force the “Analog Window.” Even 20 minutes of outside time resets the body’s internal clock and dopamine levels.
-
Find a “High-Participation” Sport: Get them into an activity like martial arts where 100% of the class is moving 100% of the time. There is no bench in our dojo.
