I remember being a young teacher in my early 20s when the “Self-Esteem Movement” really took flight. The idea was simple: we wanted to build up every child’s confidence by making sure nobody ever felt like a “loser.” We started giving medals for 4th, 5th, and 6th place. We started giving trophies just for showing up.
Fast forward two decades, and where has that gotten us?
As a Master of Education with over 30 years in martial arts, I can tell you exactly where it got us: we have a generation of kids with lower self-esteem than ever before. Why? Because we robbed them of the “Grind.”
The Super Mario Effect
Think about the first time you played Super Mario Brothers. You hit that first question mark brick, a mushroom popped out, and suddenly you had superpowers. That is instant dopamine. Video games are engineered to give rewards with zero struggle. When a child’s life is filled with instant gratification and participation awards, they never learn how to overcome an obstacle.
Without obstacles, you can’t develop grit. And without grit, you can never have true, lasting confidence.
What Makes a Successful Adult?
There is a famous TED Talk by Angela Duckworth on the subject of Grit. Researchers looked at every demographic—income, education, IQ—and found that the single greatest predictor of success in adulthood wasn’t talent. It was grit. It was the ability to fail, get back up, and push through the “bumps and bruises” of life.
At Championship Martial Arts – Kenosha, we don’t do participation trophies. We do Meaningful Achievement. Our students have to earn every stripe and every belt.
When a child has to work for three months to master a Bilateral Coordination drill or a sparring set, the confidence they feel when they finally succeed is real. It’s not “birthday cake and apple pie” confidence—it’s the indomitable spirit of someone who knows they can handle a challenge.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
Stop the “Everyone Wins” Narrative: It’s okay for your child to lose. Losing is the greatest teacher of grit.
-
Audit the Dopamine: If your child is getting all their “wins” from a screen (like Super Mario or Minecraft), they are living in a false reality. Balance it with a physical “grind.”
-
Choose “Earned” Activities: Find programs that require testing and physical standards. True confidence is built on the mat, not handed out in a gift bag at the end of the season.
