If your child is constantly winning—first place, gold medal, top of the class—you might think you’re raising a superstar. But as a former teacher with a Master’s in Education, I’m here to tell you something counterintuitive: If your child is always in first place, you are in the wrong competition.
The “Big Fish, Small Pond” Trap
Winning is great. It feels good to be the top dog. But if your child never faces a challenge that they can’t easily overcome, they will never develop the resilience required to thrive in the “ocean.” If they go to a regional competition and get “blown out of the water,” it’s not a failure—it’s a wake-up call that they are finally being challenged by peers who are just as hungry as they are.
Why Third Place is the Sweet Spot
Third place is where the growth happens. It means your child is surrounded by people who are better than them, which is the fastest way to get better themselves. When you are in third, you are climbing. When you are always in first, you are coasting.
How to Coach Your Child (The “Professional Feedback” Rule)
Parents often want to storm the judges’ table to ask, “Why didn’t my child win?” Don’t do that. It’s the fastest way to hurt your child’s reputation.
Instead, teach your child to approach the judge, the coach, or the teacher with a “Professional Growth” script. After the event, have them ask:
“Excuse me, I enjoyed today’s competition. What would you like to see me work on between now and the next time we meet?”
This simple sentence accomplishes three things:
-
It shows humility: You aren’t demanding a better score; you are demanding better skills.
-
It invites mentorship: It signals to the judge that you value their expertise.
-
It provides a roadmap: You walk away with a specific technical adjustment (like “straighten your wrist” or “sharpen your focus”) that directly leads to the next level of mastery.
At Championship Martial Arts – Kenosha, we love the kids who come off the mat after a tough match and ask, “How do I fix that?” Those are the future black belts.
