As parents, we constantly juggle schedules, sports leagues, and extracurricular sign-ups. With so many options available—from soccer and gymnastics to music lessons and coding clubs—it’s easy to wonder: Which activities actually matter most for my child’s long-term development?
Over my decades as an educator and martial arts instructor, I have formed a very strong opinion on this. In fact, I believe it’s practically fact: There are two specific activities that every single child should participate in for extensive time as they grow up.
Not only do these two activities build physical athleticism, but they also provide essential, life-saving skills that stay with your child for the rest of their life.
🏊 1. Activity #1: Swimming Lessons (A True Life Skill)
Every child should take swimming lessons for at least a couple of years. You don’t need your child to turn into an Olympic rocket in the pool, but they do need “mad swimming skills.”
Water safety is a non-negotiable life skill. Whether at a family lake house, a neighborhood pool party, or a summer vacation, knowing how to handle yourself in the water gives kids safety and parents complete peace of mind.
🥋 2. Activity #2: Self-Defense & Martial Arts (Protection for an Unpredictable World)
Just like swimming, knowing how to defend yourself physically is a basic human necessity. Let’s face it—the world can get ugly sometimes. Whether it’s a child facing physical bullying at school or an adult encountering a real-world threat later in life, everyone should possess the tools to protect themselves.
Training in martial arts for at least a few years equips children with real physical defense skills, situational awareness, and the ability to de-escalate or navigate conflict safely.
🛡️ 3. Moving Beyond “Anti-Bully” to “Pro-Stand Up for Yourself”
For decades, schools and communities have pushed “anti-bullying” campaigns. While anti-bullying initiatives are wonderful, being passive or relying solely on adults isn’t always enough when a child is confronted.
Children don’t just need to be anti-bully—they need to be pro-stand up for yourself.
In our dojo, we teach kids to hold their chin up, put their chest out, and project an unshakeable posture of confidence. Bullies target quiet, unsure targets; when a child carries themselves with real physical poise and self-assurance, they naturally deter aggression before a conflict ever starts.
🧠 4. The Bonus: Confidence at School & Self-Discipline at Home
While swimming keeps kids safe in the water, martial arts spills over into every single area of a child’s daily life.
Beyond self-defense, martial arts builds the two things every parent wants most:
-
Classroom Confidence: Raising their hand, speaking up, making friends, and overcoming academic anxiety.
-
Home Self-Discipline: Following household rules, showing respect, and taking responsibility without being asked ten times.
