If you have a 4, 5, or 6-year-old at home, you already know they have an endless supply of energy!
The biggest challenge parents face during early childhood isn’t finding ways to wear their kids out—it’s teaching them how to channel that energy into focus, self-control, and patience. How do you teach a preschooler to wait their turn patiently, follow multi-step instructions, and still give 100% effort when it’s their time to shine?
In a recent video clip from our training floor at Championship Martial Arts in Kenosha, our Little Dragons demonstrated how structured martial arts drills turn high-energy play into life-skills development.
📣 1. The “Last Time, Best Time!” Mindset
When our Little Dragons line up with their sparring gloves on to strike the BOB body bag, you’ll hear our instructors calling out a core mantra on our floor: “Last Time, Best Time!”
In many sports and activities, young children tend to start strong and fizzle out as they get tired. By teaching kids that their final attempt should always be their absolute best effort, we build a lifelong habit of finish-line focus:
-
Maximum Effort: Instead of slacking off at the end of a drill, students learn to dig deep and finish strong.
-
Positive Coaching: Hearing an instructor say, “Let’s make some noise!” gives children immediate positive reinforcement for striking with proper technique and commitment.
-
Earned Pride: When a 5-year-old throws a powerful punch combination and sees their instructor smile and give props, their eyes light up with unshakeable self-confidence.
🚶♂️ 2. The Discipline of the Line: Teaching Patience & Self-Regulation
Striking the bag with power is fun, but what happens before and after a child takes their turn is where real discipline is forged.
Watch a group of 4 to 6-year-olds in a traditional setting, and you’ll often see pushing, wiggling, or cutting in line. On our martial arts mat, waiting in line is an active self-control exercise:
-
Respectful Waiting: Students stand tall in line, keeping their hands to themselves and cheering on their classmates.
-
Turn-Taking: Children learn to wait patiently for their cue, building impulse control that directly benefits them in preschool and kindergarten classrooms.
-
Social Encouragement: Seeing peers put in maximum effort inspires every child in line to bring their best energy when it’s their turn.
🧠 3. A Healthy, Safe Outlet for Big Energy
Young children need physical outlets where they can safely release stress, make noise, and test their physical limits.
Rather than letting that energy turn into indoor running or home tantrums, our Little Dragons program gives kids a structured floor where they can hit target bags hard, yell a confident martial arts “Kiai!”, and learn proper athletic stance—all under the guidance of expert instructors.
