As a former teacher with a Master’s in Education, I see the same pattern everywhere: parents who are so terrified of their child failing that they clear every obstacle out of their way. They want to provide their child with every advantage they didn’t have as a kid.
But here is the hard truth: If you clear every hurdle, your child will never learn how to jump.
The “Bruce Lee” Wisdom
There’s a powerful quote attributed to Bruce Lee that I come back to constantly: “Don’t give your child everything that you didn’t have. Teach your child everything that you didn’t know.”
Giving them more toys, more screens, and fewer responsibilities doesn’t make them stronger—it makes them more dependent. Teaching them how to handle a setback, how to regulate their emotions, and how to “pick themselves up” when they fail? That is how you build a child who can handle the real world.
Why “Grit” is the Ultimate Goal
Grit is the perseverance, the grind, and the ability to push through when things get tough. Whether it’s bullying, academic pressure in Kenosha Unified, or navigating college, grit is the common denominator of successful students.
You don’t build grit by succeeding 100% of the time. You build it by falling flat on your face and realizing that you didn’t break. You build it by using the PCP Method (Praise-Correct-Praise) to analyze what went wrong and how to improve for next time.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
Stop Clearing the Path: If your child forgets their homework, don’t rush it to the school. Let them experience the natural consequence. That feeling of “I need to be more prepared” is a lesson no textbook can teach.
-
Focus on “What I Didn’t Know”: Instead of buying your child the latest gadget, teach them a skill you wish you had learned earlier—financial literacy, how to cook, or the discipline of Martial Arts training.
-
Celebrate the Recovery: When your child fails, don’t focus on the error. Celebrate the fact that they picked themselves back up and kept going. That is the definition of grit.
