If you are brand new to the martial arts scene and trying to find the best program for yourself or your child, opening up Google can instantly feel overwhelming.
Every school claims to come from the “best of the best” instructors, the ultimate lineage, or the superior style. You see terms like Taekwondo, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA thrown around, and it can be hard to tell what actually matters.
Over the years, we’ve had up to three generations of families take classes through our karate schools in Kenosha, Oak Creek, and Racine. Having guided thousands of local students, here is our top piece of advice for any first-time parent:
Pay zero attention to the style name!
Here is why style names don’t tell the whole story, and what you should actually look for when evaluating a martial arts school in Kenosha.
🥋 1. Style Names Are Just Big Umbrellas
Terms like “Karate” or “MMA” are broad umbrella labels:
-
Karate: A huge umbrella term for traditional striking styles, particularly those originating from Japan or Okinawa.
-
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts): A massive catch-all term for combining striking, grappling, and sport combat.
-
Taekwondo: A Korean martial art centered around dynamic kicking and sport competition.
The truth is, no two schools teach the exact same way. You can visit 10 different Taekwondo schools or 100 different Karate and MMA gyms, and every single one will operate with a completely different culture, structure, and coaching philosophy.
Instead of getting hung up on the name on the sign, walk through the front door, observe a live class, and see how the instructors actually interact with the students.
💡 2. The 3-Pillar Test: Learning, Laughing, and Sweating
When you watch a class in action, check to see if it passes these three essential pillars:
-
🧠 Learning (Mental Challenge): Are the students actively engaged, mentally challenged, and developing real coordination and discipline?
-
😄 Laughing (An Enjoyable Environment): We aren’t circus clowns, and classes aren’t chaotic playtime. But training should be enjoyable! True discipline is built through high energy, encouragement, and mutual respect—not old-school drill sergeants hollering at frightened kids.
-
💦 Sweating (Real Physical Effort): Kids need a real workout! There should be a little sweat on their brow from kicking shields, punching targets, and burning off steam.
When a class combines Learning, Laughing, and Sweating, you have found a winning environment where students thrive.
🥊 3. Setting Up Every Student for Success “On the House”
A great school never throws a brand-new, nervous student straight out onto a floor full of experienced kids without preparation.
When you visit us, we offer an initial 1-on-1 or small group introductory lesson on the house. During this evaluation, we take the time to teach your child foundational karate punches, defensive blocks, and kicks. By mastering the basic fundamentals in a low-pressure setting first, your child feels completely confident and prepared when they step onto the dojo floor with their peers!
