When parents in Kenosha start researching martial arts programs for their children, they usually have a lot of practical questions:
“How old does my child need to be to start?”
“Will my beginner child be thrown into a class with advanced black belts?”
“Do they start sparring and using martial arts weapons right away?”
At Championship Martial Arts, we run 7 to 8 classes a day to ensure every single student receives instruction that is completely age-appropriate and rank-appropriate. Here is a full breakdown of how our youth programs are structured so your child gets the perfect balance of fun, safety, and step-by-step progress!
🧒 1. Starting at Age 4: Why We Wait Until 4
We frequently get phone calls from eager parents asking: “My child is 3, but they are super advanced—can they start karate?”
We love the enthusiasm, and every parent sees the unique potential in their child! However, our youngest program is designed specifically for 4 to 6-year-olds. In a 4 to 6-year-old class, a 4-year-old student is working out right next to a 6-year-old. At age 3, children generally lack the basic physical frame and focus needed to train alongside 6-year-olds safely.
Starting at age 4 gives preschoolers and kindergarteners the ideal entry point to build listening skills, core balance, and motor control.
🥋 2. Divided by Age Group & Belt Level (No Overcrowded Mixing!)
Nothing is more frustrating for a new student than feeling lost in a crowd of advanced martial artists, and nothing holds back an advanced student quite like reviewing beginner basics every single day.
That’s why we run a high-volume schedule broken down by both age and belt rank:
-
Age Divisions: * Little Dragons / Tigers: Ages 4 to 6
-
Youth Program: Ages 7 to 12
-
Teens & Adults: Flexible based on the individual student’s physical size and maturity level.
-
-
Rank Divisions: Within our youth schedule, classes are split by belt level! Beginners train in dedicated White Belt classes. As they advance, they transition into dedicated Yellow & Orange Belt classes, followed by intermediate, advanced, and black belt sessions.
Green belts are ready to learn complex katas and combination strikes, while white belts need foundational footwork—separating ranks keeps every class focused and effective!
⚔️ 3. Core Basics First, Advanced Skills Later
Parents often ask if their 5-year-old will be sparring or swinging weapons on day one. The short answer is no!
Every student begins in our Basic Program. Before anyone puts on sparring gear or learns traditional weapons like nunchucks, they must first build a rock-solid foundation in:
-
First-Time Listening & Focus: Listening to instructors and parents the very first time an instruction is given.
-
Basic Stances & Safety: Proper wrist alignment, foot pivots, and defensive blocks to prevent injury.
-
Emotional Discipline: Learning self-control and respect on and off the mat.
Once students demonstrate reliable self-discipline and strong basic mechanics, they earn the opportunity to join specialized programs like sparring or weapons training!
